iChat hates me
Many Mac users around the world are having problems using video chat on iChat AV. The problem is routers or so I hear, every time I try to video chat with some ( sometimes video chat works) i get an error message concerning a communication error -8. When typed into google, there are several people with my same problem, why can't iChat love everyone equally, does it just hate mexicans. Why can't I hit Video Chat and it just works, I can just hope the new OS can fix this or someone can help me.
Sorry Apple I just had to say it,
Roy
iChat isn't really the main culprit here Roy, it's more the routers that sit in between any two people on the internet that are causing the issues. I'll try to simplify this into a non-technical metaphor that will probably just end up confusing you even more, but why the hell not.
Think of your router as an apartment building in the big, complex, neighborhood of the internet. When you try to send something to a well known place (google.com for example), your computer can figure out the "mailing address" (ip address and port) to send something to because they have an exact address for their "building" (server). If you send something to an apartment building's address, who knows where it's actually intended to go, since an apartment building can have tens of hundreds of tenants behind that one address (just like you can have multiple computers behind one router at home). When you try to communicate with other folks in these "apartment buildings" you may end up sending something to the front office instead of a specific tenant.
Continuing with this metaphor, iChat tries to figure out it's own "box number" so it can tell whoever you're trying to communicate with your exact "mailing address" else you might get "return to sender" errors when iChat can't figure out exactly where to send data.
Basically, iChat is trying to do the best it can to figure out the exact mailing address of both your computer, and the individual with whom you're trying to video chat with, but it can't for some reason, thus the communications error.
(Extremely simplified, but I figure this shuold help you at least understand it to some extent)
Ya know I hear the router excuse all the time - how come Skype works flawlessly time and time again (video chat) without these problems. Apple has dropped the ball with iChat.
I've spent the best part of the last two hours trying to figure this out, and have given up. Apple is famous for simple, excellent products - this, however, is an absolute joke.
If Skype can do it, you'd think Apple can too. So c'mon, where's the software update... :)
the same problem is all aroudn the world I guess. I am from Italy but my f (american) got two mac books in the states. we ichat with almost no problem, succesfully chat and VideoChat with Skype or yahoo messenger...EXCEPT for ICHAT!!?!?!??!?! It odes not make any sense to me. The router thing would mean something if it didnt work with Anything!
I am very disappointed with ICHAT ...nice features I cannot fully enjoy!
and nobody knows waht to do....not even Apple store tech personnel...
!?!?!??!
VIDEO is the one i am having problem and we all or most of us are as far as i understood..and im not even talking about an xternal webcam installed...its the original one set from MAC....
it just drives me crazy..i have the mac book for about 9months now and still couldnt figure out why VIDEO wont work but skype and various messengers do...
VERY DISAPPOINTING!
